Rosa Parks

Rosa parks was a well respected black woman and secretary for the NAACP.
Rosa parks boarded a bus after work. She sat in the 11th row and refused to give up her seat when a white man boarded the bus and needed a seat. She refused because she was tired from working all day and was arrested. A bus boycott was organized for the morning of the trial. 17,000 African Americans did not ride the bus in protest of the discrimination. The bus boycott lasted for a year, until the Supreme court ruled that the segregated busses were unconstitutional.

The civil right movement was a struggle for social justice that took place took place during the 1950s and 1960s for blacks to gain equal rights under the law in the United States. The civil war had officially abolished slavery, but it didn’t end discrimination against blacks- they continued to endure the devastating effects of racism, especially in the South. By the mid-20th century, African American had had more than enough of prejudice and violence against them. They, along with many whites, mobilized and unprecedented fight for equality that spanned two decades.

Brown Girl Dreaming is an autobiographical story of author Jacqueline Woodson's childhood, written in verse. Jacqueline is born in Columbus, Ohio in 1963 to Jack Woodson and Mary Ann Irby. She has an older brother Hope and an older sister Odella. A year after Jacqueline's birth, her parents separate, she and her siblings move to their mother's parents' home in Greenville, South Carolina. The children are left with their grandparents as their mother explores New York, they are forced to become Jehovah's Witnesses like their grandmother.Eventually, Jacqueline's mother finds a place for the family in New York, she moves the children there. Jacqueline and her siblings feel out of place due to their Southern accents and upbringing, they must adapt to having another sibling, named Roman. The older children return to South Carolina in the summers, while Roman spends much of his early life in the hospital due to ingesting lead paint. Jacqueline learns to love New York and enjoys attending school and spending time with her best friend, a Puerto Rican girl named Maria.
