Sarah Breedlove was born December 23, 1867. She grew up in the South under very racist conditions.Her parents Owen and Minerva Breedlove were slaves until President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation, freed the slaves. She was one of six siblings, and the first child in her family was born into freedom. The Breedlove’s continued life in Delta, Louisiana. For a short period of time they were not enslaved but instead of being enslaved they were only sharecroppers. The Breedlove’s shared cotton. Like her brothers and sisters she was working in the cotton field growing crops by the time she was 6 years old.

Jackie Robinson was born in Cairo, Georgia in 1919. His mother, Mallie Robinson, was a single mom and raised Jackie and four other children. At the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), Jackie became the first athlete to win varsity letters in four sports; baseball, basketball, football and track. Due to his financial difficulties, he was forced to leave college. Jackie enlisted in the U.S. Army. After two years he left the army. In 1945, Jackie played one season in the Negro Baseball League with the Kansas City Monarchs. In 1947, Brooklyn Dodgers president Branch Rickey asked Jackie to join the Brooklyn Dodgers.
